Afforestation in Hatert and Niftrik, Gelderland

Staatsbosbeheer, a Dutch government organisation for forestry and the management of nature reserves, attaches great importance to the creation of more forests in the Netherlands. Forests are the green lungs of the Earth and play a vital factor in climate control, biodiversity, sustainable wood production and recreation. That is why Staatsbosbeheer is planning 5,000 hectares of new forest on its own sites in the next 10 years. Goodman will be helping to realise this ambition.

A new forest in Hatert

A plot of former agricultural land in Hatert, a suburb near Nijmegen and situated along the Maas-Waal canal, proved to be very suitable for planting a new forest. In cooperation with Staatsbosbeheer, Goodman has planted hardwood species that are appropriate to the location and the local environmental conditions. No large trees were planted, but smaller perennial trees are given space to grow into a diverse and beautiful forest. The soil of the former grassland consists of loam and clay soils and is therefore suitable for a wet forest type. With this project, we realised 2.6 ha of mixed deciduous forest, totalling 11,750 trees and shrubs. The main part of the vegetation consisting of black alders, willow and oak trees, but also birch, hornbeam, lime trees and sweet cherry trees. Shrubs such as dog rose, Guelder rose, hawthorn, hazel and rowan form the lower parts of the forest.

Forestation in Niftrik

Between Niftrik and Wijchen, interspersed between a local railway track and a bike path, a plot of former agricultural land proved to be suitable for the development of a new forest. The new forest will not only form a connection to the already existing surrounding forests, but also benefits the local residents and, of course, forest wildlife. This project – another fruitful cooperation between Goodman and Staatsbosbeheer - creates 4.3 ha of mixed deciduous forest. The forest consists of a total of 6,028 three-year old trees and plants, which were planted in a 2.5 x 2.5 metre pattern over a surface of 3.2 hectares. This allows the new forest to develop somewhat faster and with fewer management and maintenance measures. Furthermore, a small pond was excavated to expand the habitat of the newt. Moreover, the excavated soil for the creation of the pond will serve as an artificial badger sett. The newly planted forest will form a stepping stone in the Heumen-Horssen ecological corridor.

CO2-sequestration

Because forests fulfil many social and environmental functions, they take a prominent role on the Goodman sustainability agenda. As part of our sustainability promise, Goodman Netherlands compensates the ecological footprint of Nijmegen III Logistics Center by, among other things, planting 5.8 ha of new forest near Hatert and Niftrik, toalling 17,778 trees. The expected CO2 sequestration calculated over a period of 50 years amounts to:

  • 6,028 trees in Niftrik: 41.24 tons of CO2 per year or 12.89 tons of CO2 per hectare and per year
  • 11,750 trees in Hatert: 23.5 tons of CO2 per year or 9.0 tons of CO2 per hectare and per year

Buitenfonds

Buitenfonds is an independent foundation that raises funds and awareness for nature projects including forestation managed by Staatsbosbeheer. This allows Staatsbosbeheer to realize valuable projects, such as afforestation and reforestation projects, bringing children out into nature, preserving and making cultural and historical treasures accessible, developing exciting ways to experience nature and enabling the social work of the forest ranger. These are often projects for which no funding is available (anymore). The Buitenfonds works together with companies and private individuals to realize green wishes for current and future generations.
